FURMAN WIN STREAK SNAPPED BY CHARLOTTE

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furman's Lady Paladin softball team saw its five-game win streak snapped on Wednesday with a pair of losses (11-4, 4-0) to the 49ers of UNC Charlotte.

In game one, the 49ers were ahead 4-0 when they broke the game open in the top of the sixth with a six-run inning. Two Furman errors contributed to the 49er scores, but Charlotte started the inning with a Leah Heston walk, and put together four hits by Denise Atmar, Autumn Lawson, Vicki Van Dam, and Kristy Constantino to further their cause.

Furman rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on five hits, including a two-run homer by center fielder Kay Brittain. It was not enough, however, as Charlotte scored again in the top of the seventh and shut out the Lady Paladins in the bottom, to earn the 11-4 victory.

In game two, Furman and Charlotte were locked in a 0-0 tie until the top of the sixth, when the 49ers scored four runs. Constantino got the inning started with a single to center field, then advanced to second on an Atmar single. Constantino scored on an error by shortstop Kelli Leachman, then a single to right center by Heston scored two more runs. Scott scored the final Charlotte run on a Lawson ground out.

The Lady Paladins equaled UNCC's hit total of four in the second game, but left 11 runners on base in the loss.

With the wins, UNCC improves to 12-11 on the season, while Furman falls to 12-17. Kelly Jack got the loss in the first game, dropping her season record to 5-6, while Missy Baldwin fell to 1-4 with the second game decision. UNCC's Betsy Thompson got the first-game win (5-4), while Amy Morse improved to 4-5 with the second game victory.
