Furman Sweeps Georgia State

Atlanta, GA - The Lady Panthers were swept in their second consecutive doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Panthersville, falling to Furman 6-0 in the first game and losing 6-3 in the second game. With the losses, Georgia State is now 26-18. The Paladins improve to 14-20 on the season.

Furman scored two runs in the first inning of the first contest to go ahead 2-0. Kelli Leachman and Kelly Jack each had RBI doubles off Lady Panthers pitcher Angela Buckem. Alison McNulty increased the Paladins' lead to 3-0 with a bases loaded single in the third inning. Furman closed out the scoring in the sixth inning with three more runs, including a two-run home run to left center by Kay Britain. The Paladins collected 13 hits in the game, while Georgia State could muster only three. Furman pitcher Chrissy Hacker recorded three strikeouts and went the distance for the victory.

In the second game, Georgia State jumped on top 1-0 in the second inning. Corrie Roberts and Jenny Hester each singled, with Roberts later coming around to score after a wild pitch by Missy Baldwin. The Paladins tied the score at one in the fourth inning after Leachman singled and then scored on a Georgia State throwing error. But the Lady Panthers forged ahead 2-1 later in the inning on a Yolanda McRae RBI single. Furman knotted the score in the fifth inning and then took the lead for good in the sixth when Britain came up big again with a bases loaded triple to right center. The Paladins tacked on another run in the seventh inning and held on for the 6-3 victory.

Andrea McNary took the loss for Georgia State and falls to 13-4 on the season. Baldwin got the win for Furman and Jack pitched the seventh in picking up the save.
