FURMAN TAKES TWO FROM WINTHROP

GREENVILLE, South Carolina--The Furman softball team defeated Winthrop in both games of the doubleheader at Pepsi Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, by scores of 8-3, and 2-1.

The Lady Paladins had a strong fifth inning to insure the win in game one of the doubleheader, with RBI singles from freshman Lakerah Barr, and seniors Kay Brittain and Kelly Jack. Sophomore shortstop Kelli Leachman added a two-run double to the mix. Furman pitcher Chrissy Hacker(10-8) pitched 61/3 innings, striking out three, and allowing only two hits for the win. Winthrop's Stephanie Koester(8-10) took the loss in 4 1/3 innings pitched, allowing six runs on six hits, and striking out four.

Furman pitcher Kelly Jack pitched a complete nine innings for the win in game two of the doubleheader. Jack(7-7) allowed only two hits in the extra-inning game, striking out five and walking one. The winning run came in the bottom of the ninth inning off a Kelly Van Houten RBI single. Van Houten went two for four in the game, with both of the Furman RBI's.

The Furman softball team will be in action again on Easter weekend with a Friday, April 13, doubleheader scheduled for 3:00 p.m., and a Saturday 2:00 p.m. single game against the College of Charleston.
