FURMAN TAKES TWO FROM ETSU, CHRISSY HACKER THROWS NO HITTER

GREENVILLE, South Carolina--The Furman softball team defeated East Tennessee State University in both games of the doubleheader in Pepsi Stadium, on Saturday. 2000 Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year, Chrissy Hacker had a full day, throwing a complete game no hitter in game one and scoring the winning run in game two.

The Lady Paladins jumped out to an early lead in game one of the doubleheader, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Furman's runs came from senior Kay Brittain's RBI single and sophomore Kelli Leachman's RBI double. Senior Chrissy Hacker used the run support to pitch a full seven inning shut-out, while striking out six. Hacker became the first Furman pitcher to throw a no hitter in the school's new Pepsi Stadium, and would have had a perfect game except for a hit batter in the second inning.

Game two of the doubleheader had all the excitement of field dedication day, one day early. Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when Leachman had an RBI single to score Hacker who reached on a catcher's interference. With the win, Furman improves to 16-20 overall and 5-3 in the Southern Conference. ETSU drops to 8-21 on the season, and 4-6 in the conference.

Furman will celebrate the ground-breaking of it's new Pepsi Stadium tomorrow as the Lady Paladins face ETSU in a single game slated for 1:30 p.m. Festivities for the Dedication Day will begin at 12:00 p.m., with the ceremony taking place at 1.
