FURMAN TAKES TWO FROM JACKSONVILLE STATE

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furman's Lady Paladin softball team took a pair of 1-0 victories from Jacksonville State Sunday at Varsity Field to improve to 11-14 on the season.

In game one, the Lady Paladins scored in the first inning, when freshman Caroline Evans reached on a fielder's choice, advanced on a Kelly Van Houten single and scored on an error by the Gamecock center fielder. One run turned out to be enough for the win, as junior Chrissy Hacker pitched seven innings of shutout ball, giving up just four hits with seven strikeouts. With the win, Hacker improved to 5-5 on the year.

Game two was much like the first, as Furman scored its lone run in the first inning and was able to hold JSU scoreless. Leadoff batter Melissa Hutton singled to the shortstop and advanced on an Alison McNulty sacrifice. A throwing error by JSU's shortstop allowed Hutton to score the unearned run. Furman freshman Missy Baldwin got the win, giving up no runs and just two hits in seven innnings work. With the victory, she improved to 3-4 on the year.

The Lady Paladins will play the Gamecocks of South Carolina on Wednesday, March 15, in Columbia. Gametime is slated for 5 p.m.
