FURMAN 2-2, UNC WILMINGTON 0-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Chrissy Hacker and Missy Baldwin limited host UNC Wilmington to a total of five hits as Furman swept a Southern Conference softball doubleheader over the Lady Seahawks by identical 2-0 scores Sunday at Boseman Field.

The Lady Paladins improved to 20-22 overall and 2-2 in the conference with the twin killing. The Lady Seahawks dipped to 15-20 overall and saw their record evened at 2-2 in the league.

Junior outfielder Kay Brittain was the hitting standout for Furman, going 3-for-6 on the day. Third baseman Jessi Anucinski also went 2-for-6 with one run batted in. Five different players had hits for the Lady Seahawks.

In the opener, Hacker, a junior right-hander, went the distance for Furman, hurling the shutout on three hits and walking just one in pushing her record to 10-7 on the season. Sophomore righty Kelly Givens (0-7) was the loser for UNCW, working five innings and allowing two unearned runs on three hits, walking two and fanning two. The Lady Paladins scored twice in the top of the second and made those runs stand up the rest of the way.

Freshman designated hitter Alison McNulty drew a one-out walk and took second on a wild pitch by Givens. Hacker then struck out for the second out, but Kelli Leachman walked and Kelly Jack followed with a single. McNulty scored on a throwing error and Leachman later came home on a wild pitch. In the nightcap, Baldwin, a rookie right-hander, rasied her record to 5-7 by going all the way, allowing just two hits, walking four and striking out four. She outdueled UNCW's Christine Feaney, who surrendered two unearned runs on six hits, walking none and fanning one.

Furman scored in its first two times at bat for the 2-0 victory. Third baseman Jessi Anucinski delivered an RBI single in the first inning, driving home Melissa Hutton, and Jack cracked an RBI triple to plate Caroline Evans with two outs in the second.
