FURMAN SOFTBALL TAKES TWO FROM SOUTH CAROLINA STATE

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The Furman softball team picked up a pair of intrastate victories Wednesday at the Furman Softball Field, with wins of 6-5, and 8-2 over the Bulldogs of South Carolina State.

In game one, the Lady Paladins took an early 1-0 lead, but South Carolina State stormed back to score one in the fifth and four in the top of the sixth to hold a 5-1 advantage. The Lady Paladins responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth keyed by an Alison McNulty double in the leadoff position. Furman pitcher Kelly Jack gave up a walk to Stephanie Lewis in the top of the seventh, but the S.C. State third baseman was thrown out stealing second moments later. Jack then forced a ground out followed by a fly out to end the game and give Furman is sixth consecutive victory.

Fireworks started early in game two with the Bulldogs and the Paladins scoring two runs each in the first innings. Furman continued, scoring six runs spread out over five innings to defeat S.C. State by a score of 8-2. Winning pitcher Missy Baldwin threw seven complete innings, increasing her record to 7-7 on the season. With the victory, Furman's win streak moved to seven and improved the Paladins'season total to 27-23. The Bulldogs dropped to 8-26 with the losses.

The Lady Paladins will be in action again Saturday and Sunday, April 15-16, against Southern Conference opponent Georgia Southern.
