Furman Softball splits with UNCG


GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The Furman softball team split a doubleheader with UNCG, Sunday, winning the first game 5-2, and dropping the second 5-4.

The Furman squad was able to improve its record to 10-25 in game one of the doubleheader, by converting 11 hits into five runs. Greensboro posted an early lead with two runs scored in the first inning, but were shut out by the Paladins after that. Furman scored two in the second inning and three in the third giving them all the insurance they needed for the win. Heather Flanagan posted two RBI en route to the win. Furman pitcher Kelly Jack (7-9) threw a four hitter, and struck out five for the win.

Game two showed a solid performance by the Paladins but they fell short of the win in the eighth inning. Going into the fourth inning, Furman held a one run lead on Greensboro, but the Spartans tied that score in the sixth inning and broke it in the eighth. The Furman squad took a blow to its morale in the first inning as first game pitcher Jack sustained a fracture to her wrist. On Sunday the Furman team moved its record to 10-26, the Lady Paladins will be in action again on Wednesday March 31 against Brown University on Varsity Field.
