FURMAN SOFTBALL WINS ONE OVER USCS


GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The Furman softball team split a doubleheader with USC-Spartanburg Thursday at Varsity Field, losing the first game 2-1 before winning the second 1-0.

USCS pitcher Kate Middagh gave up just one run in seven innings of work to earn the win in ThursdayÕs first game. Middagh struck out four and scattered five hits. Her teammate Beth Bayer scored both Rifle runs reaching base in the fourth on a triple and in the sixth on a fielderÕs choice.

Game two of the doubleheader told a different story. Kelly Jack pitched seven innings for the Paladins, striking out seven, earning her first victory this season. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Furman's Erin Keen reached on a single and scored on an Amanda Lewis hit to right field.
