FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM TOPS SOUTH CAROLINA 1-0

COLUMBIA, SC .-- The Furman women's soccer team defeated South Carolina 1-0 Tuesday night in Columbia at South Carolina's Eugene E. Stone Soccer Stadium.

Furman's Emily Turgeon scored the match's lone goal as the Lady Paladins jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 19:24. Turgeon scored her first goal of the season after receiving a pass from Tara Marker. Turgeon received the pass, beat the Gamecock defensive line and scored from 15 yards out.

Furman kept the pressure on as it had additional chances to score and the Lady Paladin defense held strong highlighted by two back-to-back clearances off the goal line by the Lady Paladin defense in the second half.

"This was a quality win," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "It was a match that we needed to win against a solid South Carolina team. But these are the types of matches that we expect to win with the squad we have. We need to keep our focus with a challenging weekend ahead."

Furman welcomed the return of Tara Marker, who sat out the Michigan State loss with a sprained ankle, as Marker put together a strong performance.

Furman improves to 1-1 on the season. The Lady Paladins will return to action Friday night against UAB at Clemson.
