FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER HOLDS OFF UNC GREENSBORO 2-1

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 advantage and held off a late UNC Greensboro charge to defeat the Spartans 2-1 in Southern Conference soccer action Thursday night at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium.

The Lady Paladins got on the board first at the 32:16 mark when senior Danielle Petro served a long ball to Emily Turgeon who slotted a shot under the charging UNCG keeper. The goal, Turgeon's 50th of her career, tied her with Melissa Turner as Furman's all-time leading goal scorer.

Furman extended its lead to 2-0 just seven minutes into the seconf half. April Raymer tallied her first goal of the season when she bent a corner kick just inside the far post at 52:20.

The Spartans answered to make the score 2-1 in the 74th minute. Deven Beachum took a pass from Dacia Beachum and drilled a shot from 28 yards out by keeper Andie Hinshaw.

UNCG continued to apply pressure to the Furman defense in the game's final 15 minutes, but were unable to draw even.

"I was proud of our team for coming out ready to play," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "We got two goals against a tough opponent and stayed focused on defense to get the win."

The win was Furman's sixth in its last eight meetings with the Spartans.
