TEXAS TOPS LADY PALADINS 1-0 AT CLEMSON INVITATIONAL

CLEMSON, SC-Carrie Schmit scored to give Texas a 1-0 halftime lead and the seventh-ranked Longhorns scored three second half goals to top Furman 4-0 in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon in the Clemson Invitational.

Schmit opened the scoring at the 19:29 mark of the first half when she scored from nine yards out on a pass from Kati McBain. Emily Turgeon recorded three shots on goal in the first half for Furman, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Texas, 3-1, controlled play in the second half, outshooting Furman 14-2. The Longhorns extended their lead to 2-0 at 58:14 into the match as Kelly McDonald took a pass from McBain and beat Furman keeper Andie Hinshaw in the lefthand corner. Texas added two more goals in the final eight minutes of the match as Priscilla Fite and Christina Fanuzzi scored off of Nicole Breger corner kicks.

Furman's best scoring chance of the match came with 6:05 remaining. Freshman Kate Johnson took on Texas keeper Dana Hall one versus one, but Hall made a sliding save to keep the shutout intact.

"Our effort today was a lot better than Friday against UAB," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "We had opportunities to score, but couldn't convert them. We have to finish those chances against teams as good as Texas."

Nicky Darling and April Raymer were both named to the All-tournament team.

Furman, 1-3 on the season, returns to action on Tuesday when it opens Southern Conference play with a 2:00 p.m. match at The Citadel.
