FURMAN FALLS 1-0 TO MICHIGAN STATE IN SEASON OPENER

EAST LANSING, MICH.-- The Furman women's soccer team lost its season opener to Michigan State 1-0 Friday night in East Lansing.

Michigan State's Abby Shepherd scored the match's lone goal on a one vs. one at the 24:18 mark off an assist from Andrea Sied and Tiffany Laskowsi.

Michigan State attempted 12 shots on the afternoon, while Furman managed 11 shots.

"We played well defensively," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Our backs and goalkeeper were excellent today. We had three of four good really good chances to score and we didn't capitalize. It is disappointing because you only have a few chances to make a national impression and we missed one of them today."

Furman was without the services of sophomore midfielder Tara Marker, who was out with an injured ankle.

Last season, Furman closed the regular season out with a 1-0 victory over the Spartans. Today's result evens the series between the two schools a 1-1.

The Lady Paladins will return to action Tuesday night against South Carolina on the road in Columbia.
