FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER DOWNS CHATTANOOGA 3-0 TO ADVANCE TO SOCON FINALS

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Furman women's soccer team advanced to the finals of the 2003 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship with a 3-0 victory over Chattanooga on Friday at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

The win marks the fifth time in the last six years that Furman has advanced to the SoCon Championship match. The Lady Paladins will play the winner of the UNCG-Appalachian State contest at 1:00 on Sunday.

Furman took the 1-0 at the 24:05 mark when Emily Turgeon knocked in a loose ball off an April Raymer corner kick.

Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year Andre'a Morrison extended Furman's lead to 2-0 when as she headed in an indirect kick from April Raymer at the 55:30 mark.

Danielle Petro drilled a shot from 20 yards out into the upper corner of the goal after receiving a pass from Kelly Shedd at the 79:12 mark.

The shutout was Andie Hinshaw's eighth of the season.

"Chattanooga gave us an excellent match today," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "J.D. Kyzer has done a fabulous job with that program and I expect them to be a contender for years to come. I was much more pleased with our effort today compared with yesterday's match (against Western Carolina). We now have a day to rest up and prepare for a huge match on Sunday."

The Lady Paladins improve to 15-4-2 on the year. Chattanooga concludes its best season in school history with a 10-6-3 overall record. The Lady Mocs won its first-ever SoCon Tournament match in Thursday's quarterfinal. The Lady Paladins are now 10-0 lifetime against UTC.

Turgeon's goal was her team-leading 13th on the season and 57th of her career, which moves her to within two goals of the Southern Conference all-time record

The win extends Furman's overall unbeaten streak to 14 matches, a school record and the second longest active streak in the nation behind North Carolina. Furman's SoCon unbeaten streak is now 26 matches, which is a SoCon record and the eighth longest conference unbeaten streak in NCAA Division I women's soccer history. In addition, Furman has now won its last 11 matches at UNCG Soccer Stadium - including SoCon Tournament matches and matches against UNCG.
