LADY PALADIN SOCCER SETS NEW SCHOOL RECORD WITH 1-0 VICTORY IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

BOONE, North Carolina -- The Lady Paladin soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to a school-record 12 matches Friday night, and improved to 13-4-2 on the year with a 1-0 victory over the Mountaineers of Appalachian State.

A scoreless tie continued more than 20 minutes into the second period when, at the 66:47 mark, Emily Turgeon headed in a Kat Kelley pass off an April Raymer corner kick to give Furman all the offense it would need for the win. Goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw recorded nine saves in the shutout.

The Furman win marks the fourth year in the last five that the Lady Paladins have completed SoCon regular season play without at loss. It also extends Furman’s Southern Conference unbeaten streak to 24 matches, which breaks the previous league mark of 23 , set by the Lady Paladins in 1999-2000.

Turgeon’s goal puts the senior forward from Raleigh, N.C. three goals away from tying the Southern Conference all-time leading goal record. Next week Turgeon and the rest of the regionally-ranked Lady Paladin team will travel to Greensboro, N.C. as the top seeded team in the Southern Conference Tournament. Furman will play Thursday at 11 a.m. against the as yet undetermined eight-seed.
