FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER DOWNS WESTERN CAROLINA 2-1 IN OVERTIME

CULLOWHEE, NC -- Emily Turgeon's goal with just over six minutes remaining in the second overtime period gave Furman a 2-1 victory over Western Carolina on Sunday. The goal was Turgeon's league-leading tenth of the season.

The play was set up as Kat Kelley sent a pass to Turgeon in the right side of the Catamount penalty box. Turgeon shot the ball past Western Carolina goalkeeper Mandi Tinsley into the far corner of the net.

Furman opened the scoring at the 3:19 mark as April Raymer ripped a 35 yard shot that deflected off the goalpost and into the back of the net. Raymer was assisted on the play by Katie Carson.

Western Carolina evened the score as Kelly Barker scored at the 17:04 mark. Barker was assisted on the goal by Lauren Bramlett and Natasha Moore.

Two score remained 1-1 until Turgeon's overtime game winner. Turgeon's goal moved her into second place on Furman's career scoring charts with 38 goals, passing fellow Raleigh, NC product Melissa Sutton (1996-99).

"This was a hard fought match," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Western Carolina played well today. In the end, it came down to a great finish by Emily Turgeon."

With the loss, Western Carolina had its 17 match home unbeaten streak snapped, posting a 16-0-1 record over the span. The Catamounts last home loss was a 2-1 decision to Furman on October 1, 2000.

With the win, Furman improves to 7-5-1 overall, 5-0 in the Southern Conference. Western Carolina falls to 6-4-2 overall, 3-1-2 in the conference.

The Lady Paladins return to action on Tuesday as they travel to face Wofford at 7 p.m.
