FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS CHATTANOOGA 5-0

CHATTANOOGA, TN -- The Furman women's soccer team defeated Chattanooga 5-0 Friday night at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Emily Turgeon put the Lady Paladins on the board at the 12:49 mark with a goal off an assist from Kat Kelley. Furman's lead would remain 1-0 through the intermission.

Turgeon added her second goal of the night as her shot from the left side of the box deflected off the leg of Chattananooga defender Kristina Coombs at the 59:08 mark. Tara Marker put Furman ahead 3-0 as she headed in a Stacy Simpson cross at the 64:14 mark.

Furman extended its lead to 4-0 as Lauren Dyches scored off an assist from Lindsey Facciolo at the 72:33 mark from five yards out. Tara Marker scored her second goal of the night at the 78:04 after receiving a long ball from Nancy Mather.

Furman outshot Chattanooga 17-3, and attempted 14 corner kicks to Chattanooga's three.

"This wasn't an easy match to prepare for and play tonight," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "The tragedy involving our men's soccer team early this morning has put soccer in perspective. Tonight's match was a chance to put our minds on something else for a short while, but our thoughts are with our men's soccer team and the family of Gray Griffin right now."

Griffin, a freshman defender on Furman's men's soccer team was killed early this morning in an automobile accident near Spartanburg, S.C.

With the win, Furman improves to 6-5-1 on the season, 4-0 in the SoCon while Chattanooga falls to 6-4, 2-3. Furman is scheduled to travel to Cullowhee, N.C. for a 1:00 p.m. match against Western Carolina on Sunday.
