FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO TENNESSEE IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

KNOXVILLE, TENN -- The Furman women's soccer team lost 5-0 to Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night at the UT Soccer Complex. The loss ends the season for the Southern Conference regular season and tournament champions as the Lady Paladins finish the season 16-6-1.

Furman withstood a tremendous amount of pressure early in the first half as Tennessee attemped 14 first half shots, while Furman only managed one. Lady Paladin goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw kept Furman in the match as she made eight first half saves, including a diving save on a Jen Laughridge shot in the 12th minute.

Tennesse finally put one away as a Sue Flamini shot from 18 yards out slipped through the hands of Hinshaw at the 36:18 mark. Flamini was assisted by Rhian Wilkenson and Lyndsey Patterson on the play. The Lady Vols took a 1-0 lead to the intermission.

Keeley Downing headed in a Rhian Wilkenson corner kick at the 52:05 mark to put Tennessee on top 2-0 at the 52:05 mark. Tennessee's lead was extended to 3-0 at the 58:54 when Jen Laughridge knocked in a Carie Swibas pass.

Tennessee extended its lead to 4-0 on a direct kick from Sue Flamini at the 77:33 mark and Kim Patrick added an additional goal at the 77:58 mark off a Nikki Bratta assist to push the lead to 5-0.

"This match did not go the way we had hoped or thought it would," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Tennesse was a very motivated and hard working team. They took it to us for 90 minutes."

"We had hoped this would be a match where we could show the kind of character that we have," said senior defender Lindsey Facciolo. "We played scared tonight and didn't show Tennessee what we were made of. It is a very disapointing way to end the season and my career."

Tennesse's five goals were the most goals allowed by Furman since September 24, 1996.

Furman is now 0-3 in the NCAA Tournament as the Lady Paladins have earned a bid in three of the last four seasons. The loss halts an 11-match winning streak, which matched the school record.

Tennessee (17-5-1) advances to face Cincinnati in the second round on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
