FURMAN FALLS TO SOUTH CAROLINA 3-1

GREENVILLE -- The Furman women's soccer team lost 3-1 to South Carolina Wednesday night at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium in front of 1,201 spectators on St. Giles United Club Night.

South Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the first half as Ashley Williams scored off an assist from Melinda Carter. Furman had the run of play in the first half as the Lady Paladins outshot South Carolina 7-4, but was unable to score.

The Lady Gamecocks would extend their lead to 2-0 when Greenville native Morgan McIntyre headed the deflection of her own shot past Furman keeper Andie Hinshaw at the 60:52 mark.

Furman's Emily Turgeon pulled the Lady Paladins to within 2-1 with an unassisted goal at the 76:10 mark. Turgeon beat two South Carolina defenders to the endline, then shot the ball past South Carolina keeper Elise Matthews.

The Lady Paladins kept the pressure on to even the score, but USC's McIntyre scored her second goal of the night at the 86:06 to put the match out of reach off an assist from Abby Markham.

"It is very frustrating to play well and not see the results," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "It's the same story as its been all season. We play well in between the goal boxes and are soft in front of our goal and in front of their goal. We start our conference season this weekend and we need to find a way to score goals and defend better."

Furman falls to 2-3-1 on the season, while South Carolina improves to 7-2.

Furman returns to action Friday in its Southern Conference opener at home against Appalachian State.
