FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS UNCG 5-2; CLAIMS SOCON TITLE OUTRIGHT


GREENSBORO, NC -- Emily Turgeon and Dre Morrison each scored two goals as the Furman women's soccer team defeated SoCon rival UNCG 5-2 Sunday afternoon to clinch the Southern Conference regular season title outright. It is Furman's fourth straight SoCon title and its fifth overall.

The win vaults Furman to to 9-0 in the Southern Conference, 11-5-1 overall. UNCG falls to 3-5-1 in the conference, 6-10-1 overall. Furman still has one league match to play, but has a two match advantage over second place Western Carolina. UNCG will host Davidson Wednesday in an effort to secure a spot in the eight team SoCon Tournament field.

Emily Turgeon put the Lady Paladins on top just 1:13 into the match as she recived a pass from Dre Morrison at the top of the box, beat the charging UNCG keeper Jennifer Stillman to the ball, and scored on an open goal. Turgeon then returned the favor to Morrison as Morrison scored from 8 yards out after receiving a Turgeon pass at the 8:07 mark.

UNCG's Amy Carnell headed in a Rakel Logadottir corner kick to pull the Spartans to within a goal at the 32:45 mark.

Dre Morrison addd her second goal of the afternoon as she knocked in the deflection of her own shot from point blank range at the 54:32 mark to extend the lead to 3-1.

Emily Turgeon then scored her second goal of the day as she knocked in a Dre Morrison cross at the 63:51 mark. Danielle Petro added Furman's fifth goal at the 82:13 mark as she beat three Spartan defenders off the dribble and scored from 15 yards out.

UNCG's Amy Carnell added her second goal of the afternoon with just 59 seconds remaining in the match to pullUNCG to within 5-2.

"It always means a lot to come up here at defeat UNCG in Greensboro," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "I was pleased with our performance today and we look forward to returning here in two weeks for the SoCon Tournament."

Furman has now deafeated UNCG four straight times in regular season play, though the Spartans have gotten the best of Furman in the 2000 and 2001 SoCon Tournaments.

The win is Furman's sixth straight on the year as the Lady Paladins have now outscored SoCon opponents 35-3 this season.
