Furman was one of four Southern Conference schools to earn the award as Davidson, East Tennessee State, and UNC Greensboro were also named. Including the Southern Conference, 11 teams from the Southeast Region in Division I received the team academic award.

"This award is one of the most important awards that our program can win," said head coach Brian Lee. "This proves that our student-athletes are not only competitve on the field, but in the classroom as well."

Furman finished the 2002 campaign with a 16-6-1 record and captured its fourth straight SoCon regular season title and its second SoCon Tournament Title, while advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years.
