FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER BEGINS COMMUNITY SERVICE PARTNERSHIP

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team launched its 2002 Community Service project, the Paladin Pals Program, Tuesday at Berea High School.

Berea High School Assistant Principal Nancy Lee, the wife of Furman head coach Brian Lee, started the program to help identified female students have a successful ninth grade year at Berea High School.

The soccer players will serve as role models, mentors, and tutors for the high school girls. They will provide tutorial assistance and will do activities to help develop the girls' self-esteem and self-concept.

"I think that this program is a great way for our student-athletes to volunteer their time and really make a difference in our community," said Brian Lee.

For their participation in the program, the high school girls will be allowed to attend any women's soccer match for free. They will also be introduced at one of the games later in the season.

Nancy Lee hopes that positive relationships will develop from the weekly interactions during the year, and that this support system will continue into the future.

"We are very fortunate to have the women's soccer players volunteering to help out with our group of female students," said Nancy Lee. "Serving as role models and mentors to high school students is a great opportunity for the players, and we are excited about the impact that this program will have on our students."
