FURMAN'S CARSON, MATHER RECEIVES SCHOLAR ATHLETE ALL-REGION HONORS

GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman seniors Katie Carson and Nancy Mather were recently named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar Athlete All-South Region Team.

Carson, a senior from Greensboro, N.C., was a first team all-region selection and was also selected to the NSCAA Scholar Athlete All-America second team earlier in December. She boasts a 3.42 grade point average as a double major in History and Spanish. She was a four-year starter for the Lady Paladins, scoring seven goals and recording 31 assists over her career. Her 31 assists rank fifth all-time at Furman. She was a first team NSCAA Scholar Athlete All-Southeast Region choice and a third team NSCAA Scholar Athlete All-America selection last season.

Mather, from Atlanta, Ga.,was a second team selection as she recently graduated from Furman with a 3.71 grade point average as a double major in Religion and Sociology. She transferred to Furman from Michigan following her sophomore season in 1999 and started at defender during the 2000 and 2002 seasons, helping Furman to two NCAA Tournament appearances and two Southern Conference regular season championships. Mather finished her career (Furman and Michigan) with one goal and ten assists. She was also a 2000 NSCAA Scholar Athlete All-Southeast region selection.

Furman finished the 2002 season with a 16-6-1 overall record as it claimed its fourth straight Southern Conference regular season title, its second SoCon Tournament title, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four seasons.
