FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER BLANKS MOREHEAD STATE 7-0

MT. PLEASANT, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team opened the 2002 season with a 7-0 victory over Morehead State in the opening match of the College of Charleston Sleep Inn Classic as six different Lady Paladins scored goals. With the win, head coach Brian Lee earned his 100th career victory.

The Lady Paladins scored five goals in the first half, including two by Emily Turgeon in the match's opening five minutes. Turgeon scored the first goal of the season for Furman at the 3:25 mark as she knocked in a deflected Erin Sanders shot. One minute later, she scored off a double assist from Lindsey Facciolo and Dre Morrison. Morrison send a ball to the left side of the box where Facciolo crossed to Turgeon.

Furman's third goal was an April Raymer penalty kick at the 17:57 mark. Senior Lindsey Facciolo was fouled in the box by Morehead State goalkeeper Stefani Workman to set up the penalty kick.

Danielle Petro chipped Workman from 25 yards out at the 31:55 mark to extend the lead to 4-0. Melissa Vogel finished the first half scoring as she scored an unassisted goal at the 39:21 mark after beating three Eagle defenders.

Furman added its sixth and seventh goals late in the second half as freshman Julie Einstein scored her first career goal at the 78:15 mark off an Andrea Brown assist and then Brown added her own goal at the 82:37 mark off a Carolyn Schmid assist.

"It was good to finally get a match under our belt," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "I was glad to be able to get everyone into the match and I thought we played with a lot of enthusiasm."

Lee, in his ninth season as Furman skipper, improves his overall record to 100-60-7.

Furman will take on Loyola (Md.) Sunday at 1:30 p.m., while Morehead State will battle the College of Charleston at 3:30 on Sunday.
