FURMAN LOSES HEARTBREAKER TO #17 CHARLOTTE 3-2

GREENVILLE, SC -- Courtney Crandell scored her second goal of the night with just five seconds remaining in the second half to lead No. 17 Charlotte to a 3-2 victory over Furman. Crandell stole the ball from the Furman defense and streaked to the goal, beating Furman goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw to the near post.

After a scoreless first half, Charlotte took the lead as Jill Hayes converted a penalty kick at the 52:00 mark. Charlotte then extended its lead at the 61:53 mark as Crandell took a Lindsay Duncan pass, beat a defender and netted her tenth goal of the season.

Furman responded at the 65:07 mark as Katie Carson led Erin Sanders with a one-two combination that Sanders banked in off the post. For Sanders, the goal was the first of her career.

Furman tied the match with eight minutes remaining as Stacy Simpson headed in a Tara Marker corner kick at the 82:02 mark for her first goal of the season.

Furman pounded the net with 20 shots, forcing Charlotte goalkeeper Lauren Dansby to make ten saves on the night. Furman also attempted 11 corner kicks to Charlotte's four.

"Tonight was the best that we have played all year," said head coach Brian Lee. "If we keep playing with that much effort and enthusiasm, we will definitely be a force later in the season and in the NCAA tournament."

The loss drops Furman to 4-4-1, while Charlotte improves to 9-0-1. The Lady Paladins return to action on Saturday as they host The Citadel at 2 p.m. at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
