FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENS SEASON IN CHARLESTON

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team will open its 2002 season Friday against Morehead State in the College of Charleston's Sleep Inn Classic at 5:00p.m. The Lady Paladins will also take on Loyola (Md.) Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

Furman returns five starters off a team that posted a 13-7-1 record and claimed a share of the Southern Conference regular season championship, its third straight title.

Furman will be led by five seniors, including NSCAA Scholar Athlete All-American and first-team All-Southern Conference midfielder Katie Carson. Junior Emily Turgeon will look to build on her record setting freshman year, which saw her lead the nation in scoring with 63 total points as she was named Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year and Freshman-of-the-Year.

The Lady Paladins also welcome an incoming class ranked as the 12th best in the nation by Soccer Buzz. Furman's class features ten freshmen, including six members of the Region II and III Olympic Development Program (ODP) Teams and Pools, and two transfers.

Morehead State is coming off a 2-16 record in 2001 as it finished sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference. Loyola finished the 2001 season with a 9-8-2 record, finishing third in the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and winning the MAAC tournament championship.

With a win this weekend, head coach Brian Lee will earn his 100th career victory.
