FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER BLANKS APPALACHIAN STATE 3-0

GREENVILLE -- The Furman women's soccer team won its Southern Conference opener on Friday night as it defeated Appalachian State 3-0 at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

Ashley Murray opened the scoring for the Lady Paladins seven minutes into the match as she beat several Mountaineer defenders and scored from 15 yards out.

Freshman Nicky Darling extended the lead to 2-0 as she beat the Appalachian State defense and knocked in a shot from five yards after receiving a pass from defender Nancy Mather. Furman outshot Appalachian State 14-1 in the opening half.

The Lady Paladins kept the pressure on in the second half, but could not find the back of the net again until the 78th minute when Emily Turgeon scored her sixth goal of the season off an assist from Katie Carson.

For the match, the Lady Paladins outshot Appalachian State 33-5 and attempted ten corner kicks to Appalachian State's three.

"I was much more pleased with our effort tonight," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "We need to work on scoring on our chances and putting more shots on the frame. It's nice to get off to a good start in the conference season."

Furman improves to 3-3-1, 1-0 in the SoCon, while Appalachian State falls to 2-6-1, 1-3 in league play.

Furman returns to action Monday night as it hosts East Tennessee State, while Appalachian State hosts UNC Wilmington on Sunday.
