FURMAN PLACES SIX ON ALL-LEAGUE TEAMS; TURGEON, LEE NAMED PLAYER, COACH-OF-THE-YEAR

GREENVILLE -- The Furman women's soccer team paced the 2002 All-Southern Conference squad with six selection, while junior Emily Turgeon was named Player-of-the-Year and head coach Brian Lee was tabbed as Coach-of-the-Year.

Turgeon, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., earns SoCon Player-of-the-Year honors for the second time in her career. As a freshman, she became the first player in SoCon women's soccer history to be named player-of-the-year and freshman-of-the-year in the same season. This season, Turgeon leads the conference in scoring with 15 goals and 7 assists for 37 points. She has six game-winning goals, including last weekend's game-winner with four minutes to play against No. 25 Michigan State.

Brian Lee is named SoCon Coach-of-the-Year for the fifth time in his career and the fourth time in the last five seasons. Lee was previously tabbed coach-of-the-year in 1994, 1998, 1999, 2000.

Lindsey Facciolo, Nicky Darling, and Turgeon earned first team honors, while Kat Kelley, Andie Hinshaw, and Nancy Mather were second team selection.

Lindsey Facciolo, a senior from Tampa, Fla., is one of the most versatile players on Furman's roster. After playing forward and midfield for much of her career, Facciolo settled into a defensive positon this year and help lead Furman's stingy defense that allowed only four goals against SoCon opponents. Facciolo is tied for second on the team with six assists.

Freshman Nicky Darling, from Coralville, Iowa, was also a first team choice. Darling, a starter at outside midfield for the Lady Paladins has scored six goals and recorded two assists on the season. She tallied two goals last week in a 2-0 victory over College of Charleston to wrap up Furman's undefeated conference season.

Freshman Andie Hinshaw, from Raleigh, N.C., has started every match in goal for the Lady Paladins this season. Hinshaw sports a 1.08 goals against average and has recorded seven solo shutouts this season. She allowed only four goals in regular season SoCon play this season.

Freshman Kat Kelley, a high school and club teammate of Hinshaw's in Raleigh, N.C., joined Hinshaw on the second team. Kelley, a starting midfieler for Furman, has been one of the most consistent players on the Lady Paladins' squad this year. She has tallied one goal and two assists on the season.

Senior captain Nancy Mather returned from a broken leg that sidelined her for the entire 2001 campaing and has started all 19 matches at defender for Furman. Mather, Facciolo, and April Raymer combined to form a strong defense for the Lady Paladins, one that has allowed only four goals in the last ten matches. Mather is tied for second on the team with six assists.

The 2002 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship begins today in Greensboro, N.C., with top seeded Furman squaring off against eighth seeded ETSU.
