Game 1 August 31, 2001

Furman 2, LaSalle 1 N

The Lady Paladins opened the season ranked eighth in the Southeast region by Soccer Buzz and were chosen by the other confernce coaches as the favorite to win the Southern Conference championship. Six Lady Paladins earned preseason honors as Melissa Turner, Kaye Brownlee, Lauren Killey, Katie Carson, Danielle Petro, and Emily Turgeon were all named to the preseason all-conference team. Furman opened its schedule with a 2-1 victory over LaSalle in the Baylor Labor Day Classic in Waco, Texas. Sophomore Danielle Petro gave Furman the lead after 30 minutes of scoreless soccer. Sophomore Emily Turgeon, the leading scorer in the nation last season, added to the lead with a goal just after halftime. With the win, the Lady Paladins were 1-0 on the season.

Game 2 September 2, 2001

Baylor 4, Furman 0 A

Despite dominating the posession of the match, Furman fell short to Baylor in the final match of the Baylor Labor Day Classic in Waco, Texas. The Lady Paladins had multiple opportunities to score, including eight corner kicks, but could not find the back of the net in the match. During the match, freshman midfielder Kelly Shedd suffered a broken left fibula. She will take a medical red-shirt this season and spend the year rehabilitating her injury following surgery. With the loss, Furman's record fell to 1-1.

Game 3 September 6, 2001

Furman 2, Vanderbilt 1 H

The Lady Paladins, ranked ninth in the NSCAA Southeast region, opened their home schedule with a 2-1 victory over SEC opponenet Vanderbilt. Furman fell behind in the first three minutes of the match after a Lady Paladin defender was called for a foul in the penalty box. Vanderbilt converted the ensuing penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead. That fouled proved to be the defense's only mistake for Furman as they held strong against an attacking Vanderbilt offense that outshot Furman 10-6 and earned 11 corner kicks. Furman tied the match midway through the first half as Emily Turgeon headed in a Melissa Turner cross after Turner raced passed the Commodore defense to the endline. Furman took the lead in the second half when freshman Alice Martin banged in a loose ball after several attempts in front of the Vanderbilt goal. With the hard-fought win, the Lady Paladins improved to 2-1 on the season.

Game 4 September 9, 2001

Furman 3, Coastal Carolina 1 A

Senior captain Melissa Turner recorded her fourth career hat-trick as she paced the Lady Paladins to a 3-1 victory over Coastal Carolina. After falling behind 1-0 less than three minutes into the second half, Turner sparked the offense in the final twenty minutes of the match. Turner finished the day with 39 career goals and 107 career points, becoming the all-time leader in both categories, passing 2000 graduate Melissa Sutton. Furman controlled the match offensively, outshooting Coastal Carolina 23-8, but just could not find a way to finish those early opportunities. With her performance against Vanderbilt and Coastal Carolina, Turner earned Southern Conference Player-of-the-Week honors. The Lady Paladins improved to 3-1 on the season with the win.

Game 5 September 17, 2001

South Carolina 3, Furman 0 A

The Lady Paladins continued what has become a fierce rivalry with the Lady Gamecocks of South Carolina but could not find a win in Columbia. Furman fell behind in the first tem minutes of the match as a defender was whistled for a foul in the penalty box, and South Carolina converted the penalty kick. The Lady Gamecocks added another goal in the first half on a scramble in front of the Furman goal, and then put the game out of reach with their third goal with 25 minutes remaining in the match. Goalkeeper Melissa Barnes made seven saves on the night. With the loss, the Lady Paladins fell to 3-2 on the season prior to opening up their Southern Confernece schedule against Davidson.

Furman 4, Davidson 1 H

The Furman women's soccer team opened up its Southern Conference season against Davidson and looked to defeat the Wildcats for the sixth straight time. The Lady Paladins entered the match ranked seventh in the Southeast Region by the NSCAA. Furman scored early and often as Danielle Petro opened the scoring less than six minutes into the match with an unassisted goal. The Lady Paladins added two more goals before intermission as Melissa Turner scored off a Petro assist, and Petro recorded her second score of the match, this time off a Katie Carson assist. Furman took a 3-1 lead into halftime. Lindsey Facciolo added the lone second-half goal on an unassisted play midway through the period. Furman extended its Southern Conference regular season winning streak to 20 matches, as well as protected an 20-match home winning streak.

Game 7 September 23, 2001

Furman 3, UNC Greensboro 0 H

The Lady Paladins closed out their first home Southern Conference weekend with a victory over conference rival Greensboro, avenging last season's loss in the Southern Conference tournament championship. These two teams have a very competitive rivalry as they have combined to win both the Southern Conference regular season championships and the tournament title in each of the last four seasons. Greensboro entered the match ranked tenth in the Souheast region. After a scoreless first half, Furman unleashed a 20-minute assault on the Spartans that resulted in three goals. Melissa Turner, Katie Carson, and Danielle Petro each scored for the Lady Paladins. Furman improved to 5-2 with the win with a 2-0 conference record. The Lady Paladins extended their conference regular season winning streak to 21 matches.

Game 8 September 28, 2001

Furman 4, New Mexico 2 N

The Furman Lady Paladins travelled to Lexington, Kentucky to participate in the Traditional Bank Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky. Furman was slated to play New Mexico and Arizona State. The Lady Paladins entered the tournament ranked ninth in the Southeast by Soccer Buzz. Furman defeated New Mexico 4-2 on the strength of a two-goal performance by both Melissa Turner and Danielle Petro. Petro opened the scoring less than 15 minutes into the match, but a New Mexico goal kept the score knotted at halftime. Furman again showed the ability to score in bunches as the Lady Paladins notched three goals in a 15-minute time period. Turner scored back-to-back goals, and Petro added her second of the match. With the win, the Lady Paladins improved to 6-2 on the season.

Game 9 September 30, 2001

Arizona State 3, Furman 1 N

The Furman Lady Paladins fell to Arizona State in their second match at the Traditional Bank Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky. Furman took the lead in this hard-fought match as Danielle Petro knocked in her third goal of the tournament at the 17:12 mark. Arizona State answered prior to halftime. The match remained deadlocked until the 67:01 mark, when Arizona State took the lead. The Sun Devils added an insurance goal with five minutes remaining in the match to secure the 3-1 win. Furman's trio of forwards, Melissa Turner, Danielle Petro, and Emily Turgeon, was named to the all-tournament team. With the loss, the Lady Paladins fell to 6-3 on the season.

Game 10 October 4, 2001

Furman 1, Charlotte 1 A

After finishing 1-1 at the Traditional Bank Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky, the Furman women's soccer team entered the week ranked tenth in the Southeast region by both Soccer Buzz and the NSCAA. The Lady Paladins travelled to Charlotte to take on the 49ers for the first time since 1996. The two teams battled through almost 85 minutes of scoreless soccer, before a 53-second flurry started and ended all the scoring on the night. Senior Kaye Brownlee scored her first goal of the season as she collected a poorly cleared ball in the box and beat the goalkeeper. Charlotte wasted no time and evened the score less than a minutes later. Neither team could find the game-winner in the overtime periods, despite several chances, including a Danielle Petro shot that sailed inches high in the 98th minute. Furmanıs record moved to 6-3-1 with the draw.

Game 11 October 6, 2001

Furman 9, Wofford 0 H

The Furman Lady Paladins returned to Southern Conference action with a home match against Wofford as part of the 2001 Furman University Family Weekend. Furman dominated a 9-0 win as Danielle Petro tied a single-game record by scoring four goals in the match. Furman scored early and often, taking a 4-0 lead after only 15 minutes. Petro scored her first two goals in the first seven minutes of the match. Emily Turgeon, Melissa Turner, and Andrea Brown each added first half goals to give Furman a 5-0 lead at the half. The Lady Paladins kept it coming in the second half as Petro tacked on her third and fourth goals of the match. Her performance in the match earned Petro Southern Conference Player-of-the-Week honors. Melissa Turner notched her second goal of the match in the final period, as well. Senior Natalie Muro scored her first career goal as she closed out the scoring in the 78th minute. Furman improved to 7-3-1 overall and 3-0 in the confernence as they extended their conference regular season winning streak to 22 and their home winning streak to 22.

#8 Clemson 2, Furman 0 H

Clemson entered the match against Furman ranked eighth in the women's soccer media poll. With a 2-0 win over Furman, Clemson ended the Lady Paladins' 22-match home winning streak. Clemson took the lead early in the match and held on despite several opportunities for Furman to score. Furman appeared ready to score the equalizer, until Clemson added an insurance goal with less than three minutes to play. With the loss, Furman fell to 7-4-1.

Game 13 October 12, 2001

Appalachian State 1, Furman 0 A

Appalachian State put an end to Furman's 22-match regular season Southern Conference winning streak with a 1-0 win over the Lady Paladins on the astro-turf at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina. Appalachian State took the lead in the first half and refused to relinquish it despite spending the majority of the second half on defense. The Lady Paladins outshot the Mountaineers 8-3 in the second half including an Alice Martin shot from 25-yards out that sailed just over goal with four seconds remaining. With the loss, Furman fell to 7-5-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Game 14 October 14, 2001

Furman 6, ETSU 0 A

The Lady Paladins returned to their winning ways with a dominant 6-0 win over East Tennessee State that was led by two Lindsey Facciolo goals in the first 18 minutes of the match. Furman's Melissa Turner gave Furman a 3-0 lead going into halftime as she added a first-half goal of her own. In the second half, the Lady Paladins used a five-minute burst to double their lead. Kaye Brownlee, Danielle Petro, and Cristina Echavarry each scored goals between the 77th and the 82nd minutes. For Echavarry, it was her first career collegiate goal. Furman dominated the match offenseively, outshooting ETSU by a 26-3 margin. With the win, the Lady Paladins improved their overall record to 8-5-1 with a 4-1 mark in the Southern Conference.

Furman 7, Chattanooga 1 H

Furman entered its final home weekend of the season ranked tenth in the Southeast region by both Soccer Buzz and the NSCAA. The Lady Paladins hosted Chattanooga as part of a Furman soccer double header slated for the 2001 Furman University Homecoming Weekend. Furman dominated a match that saw seven Lady Paladins enter the scorebook. Furman started the offense early as Melissa Turner gave the Lady Paladins a 1-0 less than four minutes into the match. Natalie Muro, Danielle Petro, Lindsey Facciolo, and Emily Turgeon each added goals in the first half to give the Furman a 5-0 lead going into halftime. Following a Chattanooga goal in the second half, Furman tacked on two more goals as Cristina Echavarry and Melissa Vogel each scored. For Vogel, it was her first career collegiate goal. Furman improved to 9-5-1 on the season and 5-1 in the Southern Conference with the win.

Game 16 October 21, 2001

Western Carolina 3, Furman 2 H

On Senior Day at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium, Furman recognized the Lady Paladins seniors for their hard work and dedication. These seven seniors had accumulated a 62-19-1 all-time record entering the match, including a 31-8 record at home and a 37-4 record against Southern Conference opponents. This group captured the 1999 and 2000 Southern Conference championship and earned spots inthe 1999 and 2000 NCAA Tournament. Furman fell behind early as Westen Carolina scored less than five minutes into the match. Furman's Kaye Brownlee quickly tied the score six minutes later. The Lady Paladins then found themselves down 3-1 with less than ten minutes to go when sophomore Emily Turgeon made every effort to be the hero. With 5:50 remaining, Turgeon cut the score to 3-2 as she volleyed in a headed pass. Less than three minutes later, Turgeon had an opportunity to tie the score but the Catamount goalkeeper made a last-ditch kick save to preserve the win for Western Carolina. With the loss, the Lady Paladins fell to 9-6-1 on the season and 5-2 in the Southern Conference.

Game 17 October 26, 2001

Furman 1, Coll. of Charleston 0 (OT) A

With the loss last weekend, Furman dropped out of the Southeast Region top ten for the first time all season. The Lady Paladins hit the road without starters Danielle Petro and Allie Park due to injury. Furman travelled first to Patriot's Point in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina to take on the College of Charleston. After 109 scoreless minutes that saw the Lady Paladins outshoot the cougars 22-12, Furman finally got the game-winner. Kathy Gaertner sent a corner kick to the far post that was punched through the Charleston defense and just over the goalline by Katie Carson. The linesman signaled the goal just as a Cougar defender cleared the ball out of the front of the goal. With the hard-fought win, Furman improved to 10-6-1 overall this season with a 6-2 mark in Southern Conference play.

Furman 2, Georgia Southern 1 (OT) A

Coming off an overtime win over the College of Charleston, the Lady Paladins travelled to Statesboro, Georgia to take on conference-leading Georgia Southern. The Lady Paladins jumped to the lead early as Kaye Brownlee converted a penalty kick after Cristina Echavarry got fouled in the penalty box chasing down a loose ball. Georgia Southern tied the match before the first half ended. The score remained tied through the second half as the Lady Paladins and the Eagles made their way toward overtime. Echavarry scored the game-winner as she poked a Natalie Muro pass over the Georgia Southern goalkeeper 3:46 into overtime. Furman improved to 11-6-1 overall and 7-2 in the Southern Conference.


Game 19 October 31, 2001

Furman 8, The Citadel 0 H

Furman closed out its regular season schedule by travelling to Charleston to take on The Citadel in the first ever meeting between the two teams. The Lady Paladins were paced offensively by hat-tricks from senior Melissa Turner and freshman Cristina Echavarry. Kaye Brownlee and Melissa Vogel also added goals for Furman. In addition, Brownlee and Katie Carson each tied the Furman single game record for assists with four each in the match. With the win, the Lady Paladins improved their overall record to 12-6-1 including an 8-2 mark in conference play. Furman also won a share of its third straight Southern Conference regular season title. The Lady Paladins were named the No. 2 seed for the Southern Conference Tournament to be held in Greenville at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium.
