FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER BLANKS WOFFORD 9-0

GREENVILLE, SC The Furman women's soccer team defeated Wofford 9-0 on Saturday afternoon on the strength of a four-goal performance by sophomore forward Danielle Petro.

Today marked only the second time in Furman soccer history that a player has scored four goals in a single match.

Petro opened the scoring less than three minutes into the match after receiving the ball from a Melissa Turner throw-in. Petro's shot from the left corner of the penalty box past Wofford goalkeeper Katie Menegaz gave Furman a 1-0 lead. Petro added to the tally four minutes later as she knocked a similar shot past the goalkeeper off a Cristina Echavarry assist.

Furman added three more goals before the intermission. Emily Turgeon scored a goal after a Katie Carson pass put her in position to beat a drawn-out goalkeeper. Turgeon then assisted on Melissa Turner's first goal of the match and Andrea Brown's first goal of the season. Turgeon beat the Wofford defense to the end line on both plays and Turner and Brown each one-touched crosses into the net to give Furman a 5-0 lead going into halftime.

Petro picked up in the second half where she left off the first as she added her third goal of the match off a Lindsey Facciolo assist less than ten minutes into the period. Melissa Turner added her second goal of the match as she one-touched a Cristina Echavarry through ball past back-up goalkeeper Katie Donnelly.

Petro scored her fourth goal of the match with what has become a signature shot from near the top of the penalty box. This time, Petro's goal came off a Katie Carson assist. Natalie Muro closed the scoring for the Lady Paladins as she banged a shot off the right post and into the goal from a Melissa Vogel pass. For Muro, it was her first career goal, and for Vogel, her first career assist.

"Today was a good win," said head coach Brian Lee. "I thought our girls came out ready to play and perform at a high level, and they did just that."

Furman dominated the match offensively, out-shooting Wofford 19-3.

Furman improves to 7-3-1 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Conference with the win, while Wofford falls to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Lady Paladins' next match will be at home as they host 11th ranked Clemson on Tuesday at 7:00.
