LADY PALADINS DEFEAT VANDERBILT 2-1

GREENVILLE -- The Furman women's soccer team defeated Vanderbilt 2-1 Thursday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium in front of 1,024 spectators.

Vanderbilt gained the upper hand early as Kat Carroll knocked in a penalty kick two minutes and twenty seconds into the match after Furman was whistled for tripping inside the box.

The Commodores held the momentum for much of the first half until Melissa Turner and Emily Turgeon combined for a spectacular goal at the 28:29 mark. Turner beat a Vanderbilt defender down the right side of the field and drilled a cross to the near post just before the ball crossed the endline. Turgeon back headed the cross past Vanderbilt keeper Stacee Sproul into the side of the net to even the score at 1-1.

The match remained deadlocked until the 75th minute when Danielle Petro ripped a shot off the cross bar. A flurry in front of the goal followed where Furman's Melissa Turner and Alice Martin attempted to knock the ball past two Commodores. After several attempts, Martin found the back of the net for the game-winner.

"This was a hard-fought, intense match," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "I am excited to see that we did not give up after falling down 1-0 so early. We kept battling hard both offensively and defensively and were able to come away with a solid victory."

Furman, ranked ninth in the Southeast Region, improves to 2-1 on the season, while Vanderbilt falls to 1-2. The Lady Paladins will take on Coastal Carolina Sunday at 1:00 in Conway, S.C.
