COLUMBIA, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team was defeated 3-0 Monday night at South Carolina's Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
South Carolina got on the board in the first half with a penalty kick goal as Lydia Bienas connected at the 9:12 mark of the first half. The Lady Gamecocks extended their lead to 2-0 at the 31:38 mark as Melinda Carter deflected a shot off Furman goalkeeper Melissa Barnes. South Carolina held the 2-0 lead into halftime.
After a Furman rally in the second half in which the Lady Paladins were unable to score, South Carolina extended its lead to 3-0 on a counter attack. Ashley Gosnell scored off a Melinda Carter assist after gaining possesion from Furman.
"Needless to say, I am disapointed," said head coach Brian Lee. "We need to play a lot better this weekend against two very good Southern Conference teams."
The loss snapped a four match winning streak for Furman against SEC teams.
Furman, ranked eighth in the Southeast Region falls to 3-2 on the year, South Carolina improves to 3-0-2.
The Lady Paladins will face Southern Conference foes Davidson and UNCG this weekend beginning with a 7:00 clash with Davidson on Friday night and concluding with a 3:00 p.m. contest against UNCG. Furman will put its 18 match Southern Conference regular season winning streak on the line.
