FURMAN DROPS CONFERENCE SEMIFINAL TO GREENSBORO

GREENVILLE, SC - The Furman women's soccer team was defeated 2-0 by UNC Greensboro in the semifinals of the 2001 Southern Conference tournament on Saturday afternoon, in a rematch of last year's tournament final.

Both team's keepers kept the first half scoreless by making clutch saves. Furman goalkeeper Melissa Barnes made a diving punch save as the first half clock expired.

After a scoreless first half, Greensboro's Jaime Ableman gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead as she headed in a cross from Katherine Trevillian at the 70:14 mark.

Furman remained on the offensive throughout the second half as they were awarded nine corner kicks in the period.

UNCG's Rakel Logadottir added the insurance goal with less than four minutes remaining as she collected a cleared ball and ripped a shot from the left corner of the penalty box.

"Today was a tough loss, but Greensboro played well," said head coach Brian Lee. "After the success of the past two years, our standards have been raised, so today's result was a disappointment."

With the loss, Furman fell to 13-7-1 on the year.
