FURMAN'S PETRO OUT FOR THE SEASON

GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman women's soccer sophomore forward Danielle Petro will miss the rest of the 2001 season after learning Monday that she has a torn ACL resulting from an injury against Western Carolina on October 21.

Petro is Furman's leading scorer this season with 13 goals and three assists in 16 matches. She was the Southern Conference's leading scorer at the time of the injury.

"We have been forced to overcome a lot of adversity this season," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Danielle is an excellent player and we will miss Daniellešs play in next weekendšs conference tournament. We will have to adjust and find ways to score goals and win."

Furman played without Petro last weekend and escaped with two key conference overtime wins as the Lady Paladins defeated College of Charleston 1-0 and Georgia Southern 2-1. Furman is in position to claim a share of the SoCon title with a win tomorrow at The Citadel to give Furman its third straight conference crown.

Petro is the third Furman starter to be suffer a season-ending injury. Senior Nancy Mather (broken leg) and freshman Kelly Shedd (broken leg) both earned redshirt status this season and will return next year.
