LADY PALADINS TAKE SEASON OPENER 2-1 AGAINST LASALLE

WACO, TEXAS -- The Furman women's soccer team opened the regular season tonight with a 2-1 vicotry over LaSalle in the first match of the Baylor Labor Day Classic.

After almost 30 minutes of scoreless soccer, sophomore Danielle Petro gave the Lady Paladins a 1-0 lead. Petro received a ball at the top of the penalty box, beat her defender, and placed a shot over the head of LaSalle goalkeeper Kaitlin Glass.

Less than two minutes into the second half, sophomore Emily Turgeon picked up where she left off as last year's Division I scoring leader. Turgeon received a pass from senior Kaye Brownlee, raced past a defender, and found the back of the net to push Furman’s lead to 2-0.

LaSalle's Krista Lee cut the lead to 2-1 late in the match on a long shot that slipped past Furman goalkeeper Melissa Barnes.

The Lady Paladins outshot LaSalle 9-7 in a physical match that produced 20 fouls and two yellow cards.

"It is always important to open the season with a win," said head coach Brian Lee. "I think tonight's match served as a test to show us where we are and to help us remember where we would like to be."

The Lady Paladins' next match will be against tournament host Baylor in the final match of the Baylor Labor Day Classic on Sunday at 7:30 pm. Furman will open its home schedule on Thursday against Vanderbilt in Greenville.
