FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER DOWNS CHARLESTON IN SOCON OPENER

GREENVILLE, SC - The Furman women's soccer team defeated the College of Charleston 1-0 Thursday night in the opening match of the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championships at Furman's Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium to advance to the SoCon semifinals for the fifth straight year.

After failing to score through 77 minutes despite dominating the flow of play for the majority of the match, Furman scored the game-winner as senior Kathy Gaertner bent a shot into the net from the left side of the box. Gaertner was assisted by fellow senior Kaye Brownlee, who registered her 57th career assist to move into ninth place all-time in NCAA Division I history in career assists.

Furman controlled the flow of the match and outshot College of Charleston 18-2 on the match.

"A win is a win and this time of year we will take a victory however it comes," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Charleston did a good job defensively, but we just were not composed in the box. We will have to finish a lot better in the semifinals."

Furman won its ninth straight against the Cougars to improve the all-time series record to 9-0.

The Lady Paladins improve to 13-6-1 on the year and will face the winner of Davidson-UNCG in the Southern Conference semifinals on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. College of Charleston finishes the season at 6-11-1.

Furman head coach Brian Lee claimed his 99th career victory with the win and can earn his 100th in the semifinals on Saturday. Lee's career record is 99-58-7.
