FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER SLIPS PAST CHARLESTON IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC - The Furman women's soccer team defeated the College of Charleston 1-0 on Friday evening at Patriot's Point on a Katie Carson goal with 10:30 remaining in the second overtime period.

The teams battled to a 0-0 tie in an evenly played first half that saw Furman outshoot Charleston 6-5. Goalkeepers Melissa Barnes and Alice Keeney made four saves each to keep the match scoreless.

Furman spent most of the second half on the offensive as they outshot Charleston 12-3. Kaye Brownlee had the best opportunity to score for the Lady Paladins. Brownlee redirected a pass through the box that seemed destined for the upper right corner of the net before Charleston goalkeeper Alice Sweeney swatted the ball away.

Each team took four shots in the overtime period, before Furman's Katie Carson found the game winner. Kathy Gaertner sent a corner kick into the box that bounced around in traffic near the far post. Carson finally punched the ball through the Cougar defense. Her shot just crossed the goal line before a Charleston defender tried to knock it back out.

"We needed a win tonight, not a tie," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "We had a lot of opportunities to score and we finally put one in at the end."

With the win, Furman improved to 10-6-1 on the season and 6-2 in the Southern Conference. The Lady Paladins travel to Statesboro, Georgia to take on Georgia Southern on Sunday at 1:00.
