FURMAN PLACES SIX ON ALL-LEAGUE TEAMS;

ECHAVARRY EARNS FRESHMAN-OF-THE-YEAR HONORS

GREENVILLE -- The Furman women's soccer team paced the 2001 All-Southern Conference squad with five first team selections. The Lady Paladins also earned one second team pick and freshman Cristina Echavarry was named the league's freshman-of-the-year.

Echavarry's freshman-of-the-year citation is the second straight rookie award for Furman and the fifth in the eight year existence of Southern Conference womenıs soccer. Echavarry finished the regular season with six goals and five assists on the year, including a hat trick at The Citadel. She is Furman's third leading goal scorer.

Kaye Brownlee, Melissa Turner, Danielle Petro, Katie Carson, and Echavarry all earned first team honors, while Lindsey Facciolo was selected to the second team.

Kaye Brownlee's selection to the first team is her fourth first team honor, making her only the second player in SoCon women's soccer history to earn first team all-conference honors all four years. Furman's Liz Bielefeld was the first (1994-98). Brownlee has scored five goals and recorded nine assists this season. She has 56 career assists, which places her 12th place in NCAA Division I history.

Melissa Turner also earned her fourth all-conference selection, including three straight first team honors. Turner is Furman's leading scorer with 14 goals and six assists for 34 points and she is tied for the scoring lead in the conference. She is Furmanıs all-time leader in career goals and points.

Danielle Petro led the team in scoring before tearing her ACL on October 21 as she scored 13 times in 16 contests. This is Petro's second all-conference citation as she was a second team recipient last season.

Katie Carson makes her first appearance on the first team all-conference squad, though she was a second team pick as a freshman in 1999. Carson leads the conference in assists this season with 11 dishes on the year.

Lindsey Facciolo has produced the best season of her career this year as she has tallied four goals and recorded four assists. Facciolo earns her first all-conference honor with her second team selection.

Furman finished the regular season with a 12-6-1 overall record and an 8-2 league mark. The Lady Paladins finished in a three-way tie for first place in the conference with UNCG and Western Carolina. Those three combined for 15 of the 22 spots on the two teams. UNCG placed three players on the first team and one on the second. Western Carolina places one on the first team and four on the second team.

UNCG's Lynsey McLean was named the conference's player-of-the-year, while former Furman assistant coach and current head coach at Western Carolina Debbie Hensley earned coach-of-the-year honors.

The 2001 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship begins Thursday at Furman's Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium. Furman and the College of Charleston will kickoff the tournament at 5:00 p.m.
