FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER EDGES GEORGIA SOUTHERN 2-1 IN OVERTIME

STATESBORO, GEORGIA -
Cristina Echavarry scored the game-winning goal 3:46
seconds into overtime to give the Furman women's soccer team a 2-1 win over
Southern Conference leading Georgia Southern.

For Echavarry, it was her third goal of the season.

Furman opened the scoring 2:14 seconds into the match. Lady Paladin forward
Katie Carson ripped a shot off the crossbar that bounced back into play in
the penalty box. As Cristina Echavarry attacked the loose ball, she was
fouled in the box by a Georgia Southern defender. Furman's Kaye Brownlee
knocked in the penalty kick to give the Lady Paladins a 1-0 lead.

Georgia Southern's Lindsey Cummings tied the score 20 minutes later.
Cummings won a ball at midfield and took the ball along the right side.
Upon reaching the penalty box, she launched a shot over the head of Furman's
goalkeeper Melissa Barnes to knot the score at 1-1.

The score remained tied through a second half that saw Furman outshoot the
Eagles 8-4. The Lady Paladins also had five corner kicks in the second
half.

Echavarry's game winner came less than four minutes into overtime. Natalie
Muro played a ball forward past an Eagle defender. Echavarry came streaking
on to the pass and poked a shot over the head of Georgia Southern goalkeeper
Tanya Woehr.

"I think that we are really playing good soccer," said head coach Brian Lee.
"We just need to take better advantage of our scoring opportunities.
Fortunately, we did take advantage of one right there at the end."

With the win, Furman improved to 11-6-1 on the season and 7-2 in the
Southern Conference and earned the opportunity to clinch a share of the Southern Confeference crown with a win over The Citadel on Wednesday afternoon in its final regular season match of the year.
