GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman freshman Emily Turgeon scored two goals to push the 13th ranked Lady Paladins past cross-state rival South Carolina, 3-1, Wednesday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
Turgeon, the nation's leading scorer now has 21 goals and 17 assists on the season in 19 contests.
It was Senior Night at Furman, and after a scoreless first half, senior co-captain Sarah Tollick started the scoring with a shot from 18 yards out after Kaye Brownlee played her the ball off of a corner kick. When Tollick started the match, it was her 83rd career start, placing her on top of the Furman women's soccer all-time matches started list.
Turgeon added the second goal of the match less than two minutes later when Danielle Petro played her a ball through the defense. Turgeon collected the pass and proceeded to beat the Gamecock goalkeeper to put the Lady Paladins up for good.
South Carolina answered back less than two minutes later when Amy Caddies found the back of the net to cut the Furman lead to 2-1. Moments later, Turgeon added her second goal of the match, this time off a Melissa Turner assist, to put the game out of reach and end the five minute scoring spree.
"Itıs exciting to end up with a victory, especially on Senior Night," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "The South Carolina matches are always tough for us, and I'm glad we finally came out of one with a win. But, our focus now has to shift to preparing for the conference tournament."
With the win, Furman rounds out the regular season with an 18-1 record, the best in Lady Paladin soccer history. Their 9-0 conference record earned the No. 1 seed in next weekend's Southern Conference tournament. The Lady Paladins will play Appalachian State on Thursday in the first round in Charleston, SC.
South Carolina fell to 4-15 with the loss.
