Charleston, S.C. -- The 13th ranked Furman women's soccer team saw its 23 match Southern Conference winning streak snapped as UNCG upset Furman 1-0 on Sunday in the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship Match.
After 83 minutes of scoreless soccer, Furman defender Lauren Killey was whistled for a controversial foul in the UNCG box setting up a penalty kick for the Lady Spartans. UNCG's Lynsey McLean rifled the penalty kick to the upper right corner of the goal to give UNCG the 1-0 lead.
The Lady Spartans withstood a late Furman flurry and held on for the upset victory.
"This was a tough loss," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "We had several opportunities to score and just didn't capitalize on them."
Furman concludes the season with a 20-2 record and will have to wait until late tonight to know if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last season, Furman finished the regular season with an identical 20-2 record and hosted a first round tournament match against Central Florida.
"I sure hope the NCAA Committee looks at the kind of season we have had and award us with an at-large bid," said Lee. "This is a disapointing loss and I just hope our seniors have more matches ahead of them. It would be great for the Southern Conference to recieve two teams in the field of 48.
Furman controlled much of the play during the match, but was unable to find the back of the net. Furman entered the match with the third most potent offense in the nation and this is only the second time this season that the Lady Paladins were held scoreless.
UNCG goalkeeper Kathryn Clewley played exceptional, stopping all of Furman's scoring opportunitites. The Lady Paladins best opportunity came with 11 minutes to play as Clewley stole the ball from Furman's Turner after Turner received a Sarah Tollick pass off a free kick in front of the goal.
Furman's Katie Carson, Kaye Brownlee, and Lindsey Facciolo were named to the all-tournament team.
