Game 1 August 27, 1999

Furman 3, Western Carolina 0 A

Furman spoiled Western Carolina's coming out party with a 3-0 victory in Cullowhee, N.C., in the Lady Catamounts first-ever women's soccer match. The match was the 100th in the history of the Furman women's soccer program. Melissa Sutton scored Furman's first goal of the season late in the first half, while Sarah Tollick and Melissa Turner scored second half goals. The match had special meaning for many of the returning Lady Paladins as Western Carolina's coach was former Furman assistant Debbie Hensley.


Game 2 September 2, 1999

Furman 3, South Florida 1 N

After falling behind 1-0 on an early South Florida goal, the Lady Paladins dominated play, cruising to a 3-1 victory. Kaye Brownlee tied the match late in the first half, while Melissa Sutton and Katie Carson capitalized on second half chances.


Game 3 September 4, 1999

Furman 3, Jacksonville 2 (OT)

A Furman rallied for its second straight come-from-behind victory to defeat Jacksonville 3-2 in overtime to win the Jacksonville Legends Tournament. Melissa Turner scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner to propel the Lady Paladins to victory. Turner was named MVP of the tournament, while Diana Poore, Kaye Brownlee, and Lauren Killey joined Turner on the all-tournament team. Turner also earned SoCon Player-of-the-Week honors. Furman opens the season 3-0 for the first time in school history.


Game 4 September 10, 1999

Richmond 1, Furman 0 (OT) N

The Lady Paladins suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Richmond Spiders int he first round of the Clemson/Nike Invitational. Furman fought hard and played exceptional defense to force the match to overtime as the Spiders out shot Furman 29-5. Freshman goalkeeper Jessi Anucinski was forced to play as starting keeper Melissa Barnes was injured minutes prior to kick off. Anucinski played remarkably, registering nine saves and not allowing a goal in the first 104 minutes. Richmond ended up winning the tournament after downing seventh ranked Clemson.


Game 5 September 12, 1999

Furman 2, Princeton 0 N

Furman finished second in the Clemson/Nike Invitational as they rebounded from the Richmond loss to shutout a strong Princeton squad. Anucinksi made seven saves in the shutout to earn all-tournament honors along with Melissa Turner and Bridgett Giles. Columbia, Md., products Sarah Tollick and Kathy Gaertner scored the Lady Paladins' goals. Freshman Katie Carson notched two assists to give her five assists in her first five collegiate matches.


Game 6 September 17, 1999

Furman 8, Troy State 0 H

Eight different players scored as Furman trounced Troy State 8-0 in the first round of the Umbro Kickoff Classic. Furman led 7-0 at halftime as 14 different players recorded either a goal or an assist on the match. Sophomore Michelle Muro and freshman Mary Crean each scored their first collegiate goals in the match.


Game 7 September 18, 1999

Furman 2, Canisius 1 H

Furman struggled against Canisius, falling behind 1-0 just 4:42 into the match. Melissa Turner's goal at the 34:35 mark evened the score and Sarah Tollick scored the game-winner with 12 minutes to play. Turner, Lindsey Facciolo, Kaye Brownlee, and Katie Carson made the all-tournament team at the Umbro Kickoff Classic.


Game 8 September 21, 1999

Furman 3, UNC Greensboro 0 A

The Furman women's soccer program captured one of it's biggest wins ever with a 3-0 shutout of 1998 SoCon champ UNC Greensboro. The Lady Spartans topped Furman in overtime in both the regular season and tournament championships last season. Furman and UNC Greensboro were preseason co-favorites to win the Southern Conference. Furman domianted the second half after an uneventful first half. The Lady Paladins outshot UNCG, who had few chances to score, 14-1 on the night. The loss was the first-ever regulat season conference loss for UNCG after 21 straight in the Big South and 19 in a row in the Southern Conference.


Game 9 September 24, 1999

Furman 1, Charleston So. 0 N

Furman took care of business, earning a 1-0 win over Charleston Southern in the first round of the Farewell to Remley's Tournament in Charleston, S.C. Senior Tara Brexel scored her first goal of the season to earn the victory. Freshman keeper Jessi Anucinski made six saves on the afternoon, including a penalty kick as she recorded her fourth shutout of the season. Anucinski finished the weekend ranked 17th in the country in goals against average.


Game 10 September 26, 1999

Furman 3, Coll. of Charleston 2 (2OT) A

After a slow start, the Lady Paladins showed a tremendous amount of heart as they rallied to defeat the College of Charleston 3-2 in overtime to stay unbeaten in the Southern Conference. Trailing 2-0 with 30 minutes to play, Kaye Brownlee started the Furman rally and Nicole Malseed finished it. Malseed scored the tying goal with 21 minutes to play in regulation and then scored the game-winner in the second overtime period. Furman earned their first-ever national ranking of any sort following the match as High Tech Soccer placed the Lady Paladins 30th in their national top 30. Kaye Brownlee earned Southern Conference player-of-the-week honors for her three goal performance over the last three matches.


Game 11 September 30, 1999

South Carolina 4, Furman 3 (OT) A

Furman lost a heart-breaker to South Carolina 4-3 in Columbia to snap a six match winning streak. Furman gained leads of 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2, but was unable to hold those leads as South Carolina forced overtime and eventually won the match. South Carolina was ranked 8th in the region, while Furman was 7th. The two teams flipped spots in the Southeast Region following the match. Kaye Brownlee recorded assists on all three of Furman's goals to set the Lady Paladin all-time assist record. In her first 31 career matches, Brownlee recorded 27 assists to set the mark.


Game 12 October 5, 1999

Furman 3, Wofford 2 (OT) H

The Lady Paladins rebounded from the USC match to defeat Wofford 3-2. It wasn't easy though, as Furman went to overtime for the third time in a row and the fifth time this season. Wofford jumped off to an early first half lead, but Furman came on strong in the start of the second half to take a 2-1 lead. Wofford later tied the match to force overtime. In overtime, the Furman attacked hard as the ball never crossed midfield. After six minutes of overtime, Melissa Turner scored her second goal of the match and her second overtime game-winner of the season.


Game 13 October 8, 1999

Furman 8, Chattanooga 0 A

After a scoreless first half, the Lady Paladins pounded Chattanooga to the tune of 8-0. Melissa Sutton recorded her third career hat trick, while Melissa Turner notched her first. Michelle Muro also come up big with a one goal, one assist performance. Furman's eight goals in the second half was the most goals scored by Furman in one half and marked the second time this season the Lady Paladins have scored eight goals in a match. Melissa Turner earned Southern Conference player-of-the-week and Soccer America Team-of-the-Week honors for her five goal performance over the week.


Game 14 October 12, 1999

Furman 2, Davidson 1 (OT) H

For the third time this season, Melissa Turner's overtime goal won a key match for the Lady Paladins. One minute into the first overtime period, Turner scored on a beautiful play as she beat two defenders, crossed field, and drilled a shot into the goal. The win put Furman in sole possession of first place in the Southern Conference as Davidson was previously unbeaten in the conference. After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Nicole Malseed came up with a huge goal to tie the match in the 72nd minute. Furman outshot Davidson 15-5 on the match.


Game 15 October 15, 1999

Furman 3, Georgia Southern 0 A

Furman moved one match closer to clinching the Southern Conference title with a 3-0 shutout of Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga. With the win, Furman tied single season records for wins and shutouts. Melissa Turner's goal tied her for the single season goal record with 11 goals. Lindsey Facciolo, Kaye Brownlee, and Melissa Turner each scored goals. Brownlee also recorded an assist, giving her 13 for the season and making her the nation's leader in assists per match. The win was the first for Furman in Statesboro.


Game 16 October 22, 1999

Furman 3, Appalachian St. 0 H

Furman improved to 8-0 in the Southern Conference as they set school records for wins (14) and shutouts (8) in a season. Melissa Turner's goal late in the second half set a Furman record for goals in a season as Furman moved one match closer to a perfect conference season. For the second straight match, Lindsey Facciolo scored the game-winner, while Katie Carson added her third goal of the season in the victory. Furman took a remarkable 23 corner kicks in the match.


Game 17 October 22, 1999

Furman 5, E. Tennessee State 0 H

Furman wrapped up their first-ever perfect regular season league finish with a 5-0 win over ETSU. The Lady Paladins earned their second SoCon title as Furman was also 1995 SoCon Champs. Five different players scored for the Lady Paladins. Kaye Brownlee led the scoring charge with a goal and two assists. Melissa Turner scored for the sixth straight time, while Lindsey Facciolo scored for the third straight time.


Game 18 October 26, 1999

Furman 2, Georgia State 1 (OT) A

For the seventh time this season, a Furman women's soccer match was not decided after 90 minutes. But again, the Lady Paladins came up big in the first few minutes of overtime as the hero this time was Sarah Tollick. Tollick scored her seventh goal of the season with 1:53 elapsed in overtime to give Furman the 2-1 win. For the first time since Furman's winning streak started, Melissa Turner did not score, but she did assist on Brownlee's first half goal.


Game 19 October 29, 1999

Furman 1, #23 Iowa 0 H

For the first time in the six-year history of the Furman women's soccer program, the Lady Paladins defeated a team ranked in the top 25 as Furman downed #23 Iowa 1-0. Lindsey Facciolo scored the lone goal and the Furman defense came up big with its tenth shutout of the season.


Southern Conference Tournament


Game 20 November 3, 1999

Furman 4, Western Carolina 0

The Lady Paladins opened the Southern Conference Tournament with a 4-0 win over Western Carolina behind two Lindsey Facciolo goals. Melissa Sutton scored the first goal of the match to make her the first women's soccer player to pass the 100 point barrier. Furman led 1-0 at halftime before Facciolo scored twice to put the match out of reach. The win was the ninth straight win for Furman, breaking the school record set last season. Facciolo now has six goals in the last six matches.


Game 21 November 6, 1999

Furman 4, Wofford 1

Furman breezed past Wofford 4-1 in the Southern Conference semifinals as Melissa Sutton and Kaye Brownlee each scored twice. Furman advanced to its second straight championship match and won its tenth straight match with the victory.


Game 22 November 7, 1999

Furman 2, Davidson 1 (4OT)

With the Southern Conference championship match just three minutes from being decided by penalty kicks, sophomore Kaye Brownlee came up with one of the biggest goals of her career as she drilled a shot past Davidson keeper Winnie Corrigan to give Furman the Southern Conference Tournament Championship. Brownlee's goal came in the 147th minute as the match advanced through four overtime periods. Furman senior Tara Brexel put the Lady Paladins on top early, but Davidson was able to even the score early in the second half. Furman claims is first-ever Southern Conference tournament championship and earns its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid. Brownlee was named tournament MVP, while Melissa Sutton, Tara Brexel, and Melissa Turner were named to the aaa-tournament team.


Game 23 November 10, 1999

Central Florida 1, Furman 0

Furman saw its incredible 1999 season come to a close as the Lady Paladins were defeated 1-0 by Central Florida in the first round of the 1999 NCAA Women's College Cup. The match's lone goal was scored by UCF's Claire Kohake at the 39:41 mark. Golden Knight midfielder Cally Howell dribbled to the right corner and crossed a perfectly placed ball to the center of the box where Kohake knocked in what proved to be the game-winner. Furman, which played four overtimes in Sunday's Southern Conference championship match, had its chances but was unable to connect. The Lady Paladins, who have the eighth most potent scoring attack in the nation, were shutout for only the second time all season. This was the first loss the Lady Paladins suffered in regulation as Furman's two previous losses came in overtime.

The loss snaps an 11-match winning steak for Furman, while Central Florida improves its unbeaten streak to 11 matches. Furman, in its sixth season of women's soccer, concluded the season with a 20-3 record. The 1999 season was the best-ever for Furman as the Lady Paladins set a school and Southern Conference record for wins in a season.
