Furman Women's Soccer Loses Heart Breaker to South Carolina in Overtime;
Brownlee Sets Assist Record

Columbia, SC-- South Carolina's Jennie Ondo scored 11 minutes into the first overtime period to give South Carolina the 4-3 victory Thursday night at USC's Eugene Stone Stadium.

Furman's Kaye Brownlee, a sophomore from Kennesaw, Ga., recorded assists on all three of the Lady Paladin goals to set the Furman career assist record with 27. She tops current senior Melissa Sutton, who has 26 career assists.

Sarah Tollick scored the first goal for the Lady Paladins at the 22:08 mark in the first half as she headed in a Kaye Brownlee direct kick directly in front of the right side of the goal. The Lady Gamecocks rallied to tie the match 14 minutes later as Jenny Ondo headed in a Mindy Sanders cross.

Furman took the 2-1 lead on a bizarre play as Kaye Brownlee's free kick from behind midfield to the top of the box was misjudged by Gamecok keeper Carrie Warner and Furman freshman Erin Sims fired a 20-yard shot into an open goal. It was the first career goal for Sims, who checked into the match just two minutes before the goal was scored.

South Carolina's Melinda Carter evened the score at 2-2 of a Jennie Ondo assist at the 50:52 mark in the second half.

Furman's third goal was set up as Sarah Tollick was fouled on a breakaway just outside the box. Kaye Brownlee notched her third assist of the match as she crossed a direct kick in front of the goal and Nicole Malseed sent the ball to the back of the net. South Carolina goalkeeper Carrie Warner was injured on the play, causing a 15 minute delay of the match. Jennie Ondo scored the equalizer just two minutes later off a Mindy Sanders assist.

"It is disappointing to lose a match like this," said Lee. "We played hard, but we have find ways to win these close ones if we want to take that next step."

Furman falls to 9-2 with the loss, while South Carolina improves to 7-2. Furman will host Wofford Tuesday, October 5 at 7 p.m.
