Furman Women's Soccer Downs UNC Greensboro 3-0

Greensboro, NC -- The Furman women's soccer team defeated UNC Greensboro 3-0 to take a commanding lead in the SoCon regular season race Tuesday night. Furman and UNCG were preseason co-favorites in the Southern Conference. The loss was the first-ever SoCon loss for UNC Greensboro, breaking a 19 match unbeaten streak. The Spartans have been a member of the Southern Conference since 1997.

After a scoreless first half, the Lady Paladins' scored at the 53:52 mark as Kaye Brownlee connected on a penalty kick. The play was set up when Furman's Melissa Sutton was fouled in the left side of the box by Spartan defender Kate Dylag. Sutton then put the Paladins ahead 2-0 with a magnificant goal from 20 yards out at the 64:51 mark. After winning a loose ball, Sutton beat two Spartan defenders and rifled a shot past Spartan keeper Kathryn Clewley. The match's final goal came as Kaye Brownlee took a Sarah Tollick throw-in, and drilled a shot to the right corner of the goal with eight minutes to play.

Furman, ranked 7th in the Southeast Region by both the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz, dominated play and the shot count. Furman attempted 14 shots, while the Spartans took one. Furman freshman goalkeeper Jessi Anucinski recorded her third shutout of the season.

"This was a tremendous win for our program," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Now we just need to stay focused and continue to play hard for the rest of the Southern Conference season."

Furman improves to 7-1, 2-0 in the Southern Conference as UNCG falls to 5-4, 4-1 in the conference.
