FURMAN'S NUSUM, BROWNLEE NAMED SOCON PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman University soccer players John Barry Nusum and Kaye Brownlee were named Southern Conference players-of-the-week on Tuesday.

Nusum scored two goals and recorded one assist last week as the Paladins defeated College of Charleston and tied South Carolina. He scored the match's first goal against Charleston and later contributed with an assist on the overtime game-winner. Against South Carolina, he scored the Paladins' lone goal as Furman tied South Carolina 1-1 in front of 2,345 spectators at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium. A sophomore from Devonshire, Bermuda, Nusum is the Paladins' leading scorer this season with six goals.

Brownlee, a sophomore from Kennesaw, Ga., was instrumental in two key Southern Conference wins for the Lady Paladins last week. She scored twice in Furman's 3-0 shutout of 1998 SoCon champ UNC Greensboro and scored the first goal in their 3-2 win over College of Charleston. Brownlee also recorded an assist on the tying goal against Charleston. She is the Lady Paladins' leading scorer with six goals and five assists on the season.

The Furman men's soccer team, off to a 6-0-1 start, is ranked 14th in the nation by the NSCAA, 14th by Soccer Times, and 19th by Soccer America. The Paladins are also ranked third in the NSCAA South Region Poll.

The Furman women's soccer team, off to its best start in school history at 9-1, is ranked seventh in the Southeast Region by the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz. Furman is also ranked 30th nationally by High Tech Soccer, a women's soccer internet and broadcasting outlet.

This marks the second Southern Conference player-of-the-week citations for both teams, as Scott Blount and Melissa Turner each earned the nod in week one on September 7.
