GULLIKSON TO PLAY SOCCER AT FURMAN

GREENVILLE, SC -- Christy Gullikson, daughter of United States Davis Cup Captain Tom Gullikson, will attend Furman University in the fall and will playsoccer.

Gullikson scored 25 goals and recorded 36 assists in four years as a center midfielder at Flagler Palm Coast High School in Palm Coast, Fla. She was a two-time second team all-conference and all-area pick, while she helped guide the squad to a district championship as a senior.

Gullikson, who comes from an extremely strong tennis family, played both soccer and tennis in high school. She chose soccer, though, as the sport she would play in the college ranks.

"I am a better soccer player than I am a tennis player," said Gullikson, 18. "I also enjoyed soccer a little more."

Gullikson's father, Tom, will lead the United States Davis Cup team in a quarterfinal match against Australia in Boston this weekend. A successful professional tennis player from 1977 to 1985, he also holds the title of USA Tennis Director of Coaching.

Christy Gullikson joins a crop of 10 freshmen and 12 newcomers to the Lady Paladin soccer team in 1999. Furman, who finished 13-8 overall and 7-1 in the Southern Conference last season, lost only one starter and will return seven All-Southern Conference performers when preseason camp opens on August 11. Furman's first match will be August 27 at Western Carolina.

"I am excited about Christy and the rest of the incoming class," said head coach Brian Lee. "There will be a lot of competition for playing time this season as we will be deeper than we ever have been."
