FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER WINS SOCON CHAMPIONSHIP IN 5-0 VICTORY OVER ETSU

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team concluded a perfect Southern Conference season as the Lady Paladins downed East Tennessee State 5-0 on Friday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

Furman completes it's first-ever perfect league season and sets a Southern Conference record for most conference wins in a season with nine. The Lady Paladins also won the SoCon championship in 1995 when there were only four teams in the league. Ten teams compete in women's soccer in the Southern Conference now.

Five different players scored for Furman as the Lady Paladins, who rank eighth in the nation in scoring, set a school record for most goals in a season with 55. Kaye Brownlee led Furman with one goal and two assists on the night, while Sarah Tollick has one goal and one assist.

Nicole Malseed opened the scoring for Furman with a goal at the 26:10 mark off a Katie Carson assist from the outside left corner of the box. Kaye Brownlee connected on her ninth goal of the season off a Natalie Muro, Lauren Killey double assist at the 42:05 of the first half.

Melissa Turner extended her record for goals in a season as she scored her 13th goal of 1999 just two minutes into the second half off a Sarah Tollick cross. Lindsey Facciolo then scored for Furman at the 53:30 mark off a Brownlee, Tollick double assist giving her a goal in each of Furman's last three matches. Tollick scored the fifth and final goal at the 57:26 mark off a Kaye Brownlee assist.

Brownlee, who is leading the nation in assists, now has 16 assists this season in 17 matches.

"It is a tremendous accomplishment to go 9-0 in the Southern Conference," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "A lot of people do not give the conference a lot of credit, but this has been a really good year for the conference and there are a lot of quality teams. To finish 9-0 is remarkable and a testament to the determination and desire our student-athletes."

Furman improves to 15-2 on the season, 9-0 in the Southern Conference. East Tennessee State falls to 3-9-1, 0-8 in the Southern Conference.

The Lady Paladins are ranked eighth in the Southeast Region in the Soccer Buzz poll and ninth in the NSCAA poll. Furman has two non-conference matches before the SoCon tournament as the Lady Paladins travel to Georgia State on Tuesday and host Iowa on Friday night. Furman will host the eighth seed in the first round of the SoCon tournament on Tuesday, November 2.
