FURMAN OUTLASTS CANISIUS IN 2-1 WIN

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furman junior Sarah Tollick deflected a rebound from a Melissa Turner header at the 78:18 mark to crack a 1-1 tie with Canisius in the Umbro Kickoff Classic. The 2-1 victory moved Furman to 6-1 on the year and placed them second in the Classic. College of Charleston won the Classic based on goal differential.

Though Furman owned the statistics with 33 shots to Canisius' three and 19 corner kicks to the Golden Griffins' zero, the Lady Paladins struggled to find the goal. Canisius struck first with a Susan Maguire score just 4:42 into the game, but the Furman defense clamped down and held the Griffins to just two more shots in the game. The Lady Paladins evened the score on a Melissa Turner goal at the 34:35 mark. Furman, meanwhile, kept Canisius goalkeeper Amy Brelinski busy, as she racked up 13 saves on the evening.

"It was good to get two wins this weekend," said head coach Brian Lee. "We will need to play much better Tuesday against UNCG if we hope to come home with a win."

The Lady Paladins travel to Greensboro, N.C., for a big Southern Conference match-up with the defending SoCon champions on Tuesday.

Furman's Melissa Turner, Kaye Brownlee, Lindsey Facciolo, and Katie Carson earned all-tournament laurels, while Canisius' Jen Gwizdowski and Amy Brelinski took honors. With the loss, Canisius fell to 1-4 on the year.
