1998 RESULTS

A little about each game ...


Florida State 4, Furman 2

Sept. 1, 1998

Furman struggled defensively as FSU's Maren Vik Eduardsen scored all four goals to lead the Lady Seminoles to a revenge victory over Furman after Furman topped FSU in 1997.


Furman 6, High Point 1

Sept. 4, 1998

After not scoring in the first 39 minutes of play, Furman scored four goals in an 11 minute span en route to a 6-1 victory over High Point. Freshman Kaye Brownlee recorded two goals and an assist in the victory, while Lindsey Facciolo and Leah Versteegen each had a goal and an assist.


Furman 1, Presybterian 0

Sept. 8, 1998

Furman once again got all it wanted from the Blue Hose as the Lady Paladins defeated PC 1-0 for the second year in a row. Leah Versteegen scored the game's only goal seven minutes into the second half off an assist from Brownlee. Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Barnes recorded her first shutout of the season.


Buffalo 3, Furman 1

Sept. 11, 1998

Furman saw its offense go flat as Buffalo scored three second half goals to lead the Bulls to an upset victory over Furman. Kaye Brownlee scored a penalty kick goal with 22 seconds to play.


Georgia State 1, Furman 0

Sept. 12, 1998

Furman and Georgia State played a tough, hard fought match that seemed sure to go to overtime with a scoreless tie, but Georgia State found the back of the net with a header as time expired to give the Panthers the 1-0 victory. Kaye Brownlee, Melissa Turner, and Leah Versteegen were named to the all-tournament team.


Furman 2, Davidson 1

Sept. 15, 1998

Furman opened the conference season with a victory over Davidson as Kaye Brownlee and Sarah Tollick mastered the give-and-go for the game-winner with just over eight minutes to play. Melissa Sutton put Furman on top early in the second half with a break-away goal, but saw Davidson even the score with ten minutes to play.


Furman 2, Elon 0

Sept. 17, 1998

Melissa Barnes recorded her second shutout of the season as Furman improved to 4-3 on the year with a 2-0 victory over Elon. Leah Versteegen and Melissa Turner each scored second half goals for the Lady Paladins.


Furman 4, ETSU 0

Sept. 20, 1998

Melissa Sutton became Furman's all-time leading scorer as she scored the game-winning goal in a 4-0 victory over ETSU. Along with Sutton, Sarah Tollick, Kaye Brownlee, and Kathy Gaertner each scored goals as Furman improved to 2-0 in the conference and won its third staight match as Barnes recorded her third shutout f the season.


Furman 4, UNCW 3

Sept. 27, 1998

Furman rallied from a 3-1 deficit with eight minutes to play to defeat UNC Wilmington 4-3. Despite outshooting UNCW 18-10 in the first half, Furman trailed 2-0 at halftime. Melissa Turner put Furman on the board early in the second half, only to see UNCW jump back on top 3-1. Nicole Malseed scored Furman's second goal of the afternoon at the 82:42 mark off an assist by Kathy Gaertner. Melissa Sutton then evened the score at the 87:36 mark off an assist from Tara Brexel. Six minutes into overtime, Kathy Gaertner scored the game-winner off assists from Leah Versteegen and Tracy Austin.


Furman 7, College of Charleston 0

Oct. 2, 1998

Furman tied a school record with its fifth consecutive win and improved to 3-0 in the Southern Conference as the Lady Paladins defeated College of Charleston 7-0. Furman jumped on top early as Kaye Brownlee scored at the 1:27 mark of the match. Leah Versteegen later added two goals, Kathy Gaertner score twice, and Nicole Malseed and Cynthia Bankston each scored one. Furman dominated Charleston as the Lady Paladins outshot them 34-2 as Melissa Barnes recorded her fourth shutout of the season.


Furman 3, Wofford 2

Oct. 6, 1998

Furman scored three goals in two minutes and 11 seconds in the first half en route to a 3-2 victory in Spartanburg. The victory was a record sixth straight and kept Furman unbeaten in the conference. Melissa Sutton scored the first goal for Furman at the 6:45 mark off a Leah Versteegen assist. Melissa Turner followed with a goal at the 8:24 mark off assists from Kathy Gaertner and Kaye Browlee. Versteegen then connected off a Turner assist at the 8:56 mark. Wofford scored twice in the second half, but was unable to even the score.


Furman 3, Georgia Southern 1

Oct. 9, 1998

It was a night of records as Furman played arguably its best match of the season in a 3-1 victory over Georgia Southern in a battle of conference unbeatens. Leah Versteegen, who had been on crutches just two days prior, recorded her second career hat trick. Versteegen passed Melissa Sutton as Furman's all-time leading scorer with her second goal of the match. Freshman Kaye Brownlee recorded two assists in the match, giving her a new Furman single season record of12 assists for the season. The win was also Furman's seventh straight and moved the Lady Paladins to 5-0 in the Southern Conference.


Furman 1, Appalachian State 0

Oct. 11, 1998

Furman traveled to Boone, N.C. and edged Appalachian State 1-0 on their artificial turf to improve to 6-0 in the conference. Melissa Turner scored the game's only goal off an assist by Leah Versteegen. Furman only managed five shots on goal and Melissa Barnes recorded her fifth shutout of the season.


South Carolina 4, Furman 3

Oct. 13, 1998

Furman fell to South Carolina in a wild 4-3 match that featured seven first half goals and two red cards in the final two minutes. After falling behind 2-0, Melissa Sutton drove past half of the Gamecock defenders and scored to cut the lead to 2-1. Nicole Malseed evened the score for Furman off assists by Sarah Tollick and Melissa Sutton. After seeing USC regain the lead at 3-2 with 2:21 remaining in the half, it took Furman 17 seconds to even the score again as Melissa Turner scored off a Melissa Sutton assist. USC only needed 22 seconds to score what turned out to be the game-winner as the two teams combined for three goals in 39 seconds. Furman then saw its two starting forwards, Melissa Sutton and Leah Versteegen ejected from the match in the last two minutes with red cards.


South Alabama 3, Furman 2

Oct. 18, 1998

Minus its two starting forwards, Furman dropped a tough 3-2 decision to South Alabama. After trailing 2-0 early in the second half, Sarah Tollick cut the Jaguar lead to 2-1 as she dribbled through several USA defenders. After seeing South Alabama go up 3-1, Tollick scored again to cut the lead to 3-2 late in the match. Furman outshot South Alabama 17-9 in the match.


N.C. State 4, Furman 0

Oct. 20, 1998

Furman traveled to Raleigh and fell to North Carolina State 4-0. The Wolfpack outshot the Paladins14-5 on the day.


UNC Greensboro 2, Furman 1 (OT)

Oct. 27, 1998

Furman lost a heart breaker and a chance to claim the Southern Conference Championship with a 2-1 overtime loss to UNCG. Furman jumped on top early with a Kathy Gaertner goal just 3:48 into the match. Gaertner was assisted by Leah Versteegen and Tara Brexel. UNCG evened the score early in the second half and won the match with a minute remaining in the first overtime period. Furman fell to 10-7 overall and 6-1 in the Southern Conference. The Lady Paladins secured the No. 2 seed in the tournament.


Furman 5, Chattanooga 0

Oct. 31, 1998

Furman ended the regular season with a 5-0 triumph over Chattanooga on senior day. Kaye Brownlee played a part in all five goals, as she recorded one goal and tied a school record with four assists. She increased her assist total to 16 for the season. Freshman Kathy Gaertner recorded two goals and an assist in the match.


Furman 3, College of Charleston 0

Nov. 3, 1998

Furman advanced in the first round of the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Tournament with a 3-0 triumph of College of Charleston. After a scoreless first half, Sarah Tollick quieted any Cougar momentum with a goal ten minutes into the second half off a double assist from Melissa Sutton and Kaye Brownlee. Brownlee continued to work her magic as she recorded an assist on Furman's second goal, scored by Tara Brexel and scored the third goal herself. Brownlee recorded her 8th goal and her 18th assist of the season to give her the Furman single season scoring record with 34 points. Brownlee also moved to #1 in the nation in assists. Freshman keeper Melissa Barnes recorded her record tying seventh shutout of the season. Furman also tied a school record for wins in a season as the Lady Paladins improve to 12-7.


Furman 3, Georgia Southern 1

Nov. 7, 1998

Furman advanced in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Georgia Southern. After a scoreless first half, Melissa Sutton put the Lady Paladins on top for good off a Kaye Brownlee assist. The assist marked Brownlee's 19th of the year and extended to nine the number of consecutive Furman goals in which Brownlee recorded a goal or an assist. Sarah Tollick scored the second goal just four minutes later as she chipped a ball over GSU keeper Vanessa Bales' head for an unassisted goal. Leah Versteegen then added another goal, her 11th on the season to increase the lead to 3-0. Versteegen tied Melissa Sutton's single season goals record with the goal. Furman also set a school record for wins in a season with 13.


UNC Greensboro 2, Furman 0 (OT)

Nov. 8, 1998

After a scoreless 90 miuntes, UNC Greensboro got two goals from Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year Ali Lord in a two minute span in the first overtime period to knock off Furman. The Lady Paladins played well, but were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Furman attempted 21 shots on the day, while UNC Greensboro attempted 22. Furman finishes the year 13-8 and set a record for wins in a season.
