Kaye Brownlee, Melissa Barnes Honored

GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman women's soccer freshman Kaye Brownlee was selected to the Soccer Buzz All-Southeast Region Second Team, while Brownlee and fellow freshman Melissa Barnes were honored as members of the Southeast Region All-freshman team.

Brownlee, a midfielder from Kennesaw, Ga., finished the season second in the nation in assists per match, while setting a school record with 35 points off eight goals and 19 assists. Brownlee's 19 assists give her the third highest assist total for a freshman in NCAA Division I history, trailing only Notre Dame's Holly Manthei (30) and Jenny Streiffer (22). Brownlee was also recognized as the Southern Conference's freshman-of-the-year, was a first team All-Southern Conference selection, and was a third team NSCAA/Umbro selection.

Barnes, a goalkeeper from Prospect, Ky., was the only goalkeeper selected to the All-Freshman team and started for Furman in every match this season. She led the Southern Conference with a goals against average of 1.50 and tied a Furman record with seven shutouts. Barnes recorded 100 saves in 1,923 minutes and was a first team All-Southern Conference selection.

"Kaye and Melissa were instrumental to our success this season," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Both are very deserving of these awards and we expect them to continue to do great things over the next three seasons."

Including Barnes and Brownlee, the Lady Paladins regularly started five freshman and Furman saw four freshman recognized as All-Southern Conference.

Southern Conference members UNC Greensboro (Ali Lord) and Georgia Southern (Tara Chaisson) each placed one member on the all-region teams, while no other Southern Conference team was represented on the all-freshman team.
